In three years Adria has come full circle, and now she must face the changes that have occurred during her exile. She returns for the sake of her brother, Prince Hafgrim, but it is for her father, the king, she is now most concerned. Are the rumors of his illness--or worse, his death--true?
Hawks and doves still war among the battlements of Windberth, Knights still drill within the citadel courtyard, but behind the walls of the keep itself, something dark awaits.
Memories of Adria's life at Windberth stir, and the reason she left three years before is revealed. But did she truly understand the reason herself?
Is Adria's life her own to live, or has it already been decided for her?

I actually have a lot to say about this piece but am having a hard time speaking my mind without spoilers. When I first cracked the spine on this one and saw the word "chess" I thought 'oh no, not another analogy on how chess mirrors life' ... not that I've seen this done a lot - only once or twice - but for one thing I don't like chess at all and, for another, I've never seen the chess analogy done well ... until now.More often than not chess analogies are written by either ardent chess players who know far too much about the game's strategies to effectively relate them to reality in such as way that someone like me - a chess hater - can both follow along and be entertained at the same time. On the opposite side I've seen chess analogies by people who know very little about the game and, thus, create connections between it and reality that one could say for basically any game - thereby losing the genius of simile.
Here, the author clearly knows the game but even more than that, he knows his audience. Now I'm sure not all of his fans are going to be ardent chess haters like me but I firmly believe that this masterfully constructed work will appeal to both sides of the game board! So is this entire piece about chess, you ask?
Well yes and no - and herein lies the danger of spoilers. You get to see Adria's back story in this piece, in fact it's almost entirely back story but it is CRUCIAL to her future and thus an exceptionally important slice of the puzzle! As pleased as I was with the earlier installment - part three is stunningly beautiful in its construction. The relationships, the nuances, the life lessons, the development of personality (and you watch her personality AS it develops which is so uniquely lovely!) all bring light to to this incredibly multifaceted girl and to the story itself. You need to know where she's been if you are to understand where she is and where she's headed (and I think I have a very good idea on the latter in particular).
All too often series writers refuse to allow their characters to grow (age yes, grow ... not so often) because they are afraid that the character will become stagnant and useless. Thus far this author has no such fear and I can clearly see that he doesn't need to. Adria is an incredibly complex yet believable personality and she seeks always to improve her knowledge, understanding, or skill on anything that interests her (which is just about everything). This gives her an immense hunger for growth and an equally spacious world in which to grow.
Don't miss this one! I can guarantee you that you will be sorry if you do.

Mobility of Pawns Heir of Scars I Part Three eBook Jacob Falling Vanessa Bettencourt Reviews
Mobility of Pawns was a particularly fascinating read within this series, mainly because of how the game of chess is the base of the whole plot. Chess is used both as a way to explain the politics of the kingdom and as a medium to describe the relationship between Adria, her father and her uncle - and, of course, it provides the revelation (for Adria, anyway, even if not for the reader yet) of what is to come.
This is also a section driven mostly by flashbacks, as we finally learn about Adria's family and background, what made her into the person she is now, and why she left to join the Aesidhe. The ending leaves us with more questions than answers - but then again, that's how great cliffhangers work, right? A must read.
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
Another stellar novella that continues the story of Adria but this one the Author expands on her character as he takes us back to her early childhood before she runs away to join her Uncle and the Aesidhe. I usually dislike books where there are flashbacks but this book is done so incredibly well that this story in itself could be a stand alone book and still be a fantastic read. How the Author entwines Adria's story with a chess game as she realizes she is not just playing the game but is being played in a game where she could never hope to be in control by players she didn't even know controlled her. What a twist! And the Author's knowledge of the game of chess that he writes into this story again shows just how much research he has put into these pages.
In Part three, A young Adria finds herself looking for a mother who isn't there and attention from her father the King. But the only attention the King has for her is when he teaches her the game of chess or allows her to sit by and watch as he plays her uncle. When she plays he is teaching her the strategic moves of battle but only enough to play never enough to win. She expands on this by learning the art of warfare from her brother who teaches her what he knows in becoming a Knight. After her father denies her request for further training she runs to join her exiled Uncle and the Ghosts of the wilds. Years later, upon her return back to Windberth, Adria confronts her father and learns the biggest lesson of all... she is exactly where she was always meant to be. Wow what a cliff hanger!!!
Another well done addition to the Heir of Scars I series and I can not wait for Part four!
